Blogger

Just an FYI that Blogger has been down for the past 20 hours, which has prevented any new posts or comments from appearing on any Blogger site. Here is a more thorough explanation from Blogger. Comments that were posted prior to the rollback date have been removed by Blogger, but should return shortly.

Access Copyright/AUCC Tariff Challenge

As you are aware from previous communiqués, the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) has opposed a proposed tariff filed by Access Copyright on behalf of the University of Alberta and other AUCC members. The proposed tariff will set the amount of royalties payable in future for making copies of published works. The Copyright Board of Canada (the “Board”) has established a proceeding to consider the proposed tariff and AUCC’s objection.

As part of the procedure before the Board, Access Copyright has addressed ‘Interrogatory Questions’ to the University. The University must answer the ‘Interrogatory Questions’ by June 3, 2011. In order to answer the questions the University is obligated to make enquiries of its employees who might reasonably be expected to have information and documentation requested in the questions. This is the second of two such enquiries (the first was intended solely for ‘Deans, Chairs and Directors’). I am responsible for compiling the University’s answers to the questions. I ask that you respond to this email if you have any of the information or documentation responsive to the following questions:

Question 7. The University must provide an inventory of photocopiers, scanners, projectors, document cameras, electronic whiteboards, computers, servers, smart phones and any other equipment that can be used to copy published works. If you have used research or other funding to purchase or lease any such equipment, please identify the type of equipment (e.g. scanners) and provide the number of each type of equipment that you acquired and that is still available for use.

Please put ‘Interrogatory staff equipment’ in the ‘Subject’ line and email response to: copyright7@ualberta.ca

Question 8. Are you aware of any third party copyshops (exclusive of the distributed McCallum Printing facilities or the Students’ Union SUB Prints), bookstores, print shops or printers (collectively “Copyshops”) that copy published works for use in a course of study offered by the University. If so, please provide the names and addresses of the Copyshops. In addition, please forward to me copies of any agreements, instructions and all communications (e.g. letters or emails) that you have with each Copyshop.

Please put ‘Interrogatory Copyshops’ in the ‘Subject’ line and email response to: copyright8@ualberta.ca

Thank you for your attention to these questions. Please respond no later than May 20, 2011.

Vice-provost & chief librarian
